Crosslinked TPU/TPE For Durable Gaskets and Seals, PFAS Alternatives

A widespread use of halogenated materials (both polymers and rubbers) can be found in applications where chemical resistance in combination with mechanical resilience is important, like gaskets and seals.

The persistence of fluorinated materials has shown to be a serious threat to the environment, leading to measures being invoked by governments worldwide. Due to its unique properties, in many situations it is very difficult to find suitable alternatives.

The two faces of PFAS materials

As a supplier of durable elastic gaskets, there is always a need for improving our products reliability, also because replacing such items often is a substantial part of maintenance costs for our customers.

Coming at a cost, the unique combination of properties is unmatched. Nevertheless, restrictions based on environmental concerns can be expected for fields where the application of such materials is not absolutely critical.

Alternative, easily processed, materials like TPU and TPE, might partly provide the desired elastomeric properties but normally lack the durability for being applied in such environments.

Replacing the perfect material?

Finding a complete alternative for all cases is not yet possible. However, in some applications, a substitution with halogen free solutions is in reach. At XINOMER, we were able to develop an improved XINOMER XRX TPU compound featuring radiation induced cross-linking functionality, improving the elastomeric properties and resilience.

An affordable application-optimised solution

This more cost effective solution enabled us to match the properties needed, while benefiting from easy processable material. With this, we, as well as out customer, are prepared for the future, support our environmental goals, and avoid possible conflicts with coming regulations.
